The EVEREST tool has been jointly developed by TNO and Equinor since 2014, building on background work and intellectual property from both parties. Ownership of the tool has been jointly vested in both companies.

The origins and success of EVEREST

EVEREST’s development began with the ISAPP research program in 2005. This initiative, launched by TNO, Delft University of Technology, and Shell, aimed to improve hydrocarbon recovery, well productivity, and reservoir development methods. The program supported over 40 PhD students, staff, and field case demonstrations. Building on ISAPP’s success, the ISAPP2 program expanded to include ENI, Petrobras, and Equinor (formerly Statoil). These new partners contributed to enhancing the closed-loop reservoir management workflow. Following ISAPP2, Equinor and TNO focused on advancing optimization aspects of the ISAPP technology. Their efforts resulted in EVEREST, a mature software tool with a Technology Readiness Level above 7. This progression from academic research to practical application has shaped EVEREST into an effective decision support platform for reservoir management. EVEREST has already transformed decision-making processes across a wide range of applications. From optimizing field development strategies to designing renewable energy systems, our technology has consistently unlocked significant value.

After a decade of successful bilateral collaboration between Equinor and TNO, we’re excited to announce that EVEREST is now open-source. This move isn’t just about sharing technology – it’s about fostering an open, collaborative environment where industry leaders can shape the future of optimization best practices.
